Prior to the start of the 2017 NHL Entry Draft, the Arizona Coyotes traded Anthony DeAngelo and the 7th overall pick to the New York Rangers for Derek Stepan and Antti Raanta. This left them with the 23rd overall pick, which they acquired from the Minnesota Wild in the Martin Hanzal deal.
With that pick, Arizona selected defenseman Pierre-Olivier Joseph from the Charlottetown Islanders of the QMJHL. Joseph, still 17, had 6 goals and 33 assists in 62 games this season. He is 6 foot 2, 163 pounds, and is described as a mobile defenseman who is hard to play against. He is also the younger brother of Tampa Bay Lightning prospect Mathieu Joseph.
As the draft continues Saturday with rounds 2-7, Arizona has five picks (35, 69, 78, 128 and 190).
