Islander fans have been on the edge of their seats waiting for John Tavares. Tavares was eligible to extend his contract on July 1st, but nothing has happened yet. This has definitely caused some fans to worry and they have every right.
It’s not entirely impossible for Tavares to stay with the Islanders. In an interview with TSN, Tavares spoke about how he wanted to stay with the Islanders. As a fan favorite, the Islanders won’t want to get rid of him. After being drafted first overall in the 2009 NHL Draft, fans instantly fell in love with him and he became the face of the Islanders. This could be reaching a bit, but he’s pretty much the Sidney Crosby of the Islanders.
But, let’s not forget what happened with Ryan Callahan. When he was still the captain of the Rangers, he spoke out about wanting to stay with the team and the fans wanted him to stay too. A few weeks later, he was traded to the Tampa Bay Lightning. It wouldn’t be surprising if the same thing happened with Tavares. Other teams have shown interest in him and could easily afford him. Contracts are all about the money.
There are 59 days until the start of the regular NHL season and there seems to be a trend of captains being traded right before the season starts. Only time will tell what will happen with Tavares and it would be better for both him and the team to figure it out sooner rather than later.
